Ethanol & its effects in garden machinery

5th Jan 2023

Ethanol is a renewable fuel that is made from plant materials, such as corn. It is blended with gasoline to create a cleaner-burning fuel that reduces emissions. In 2021, the UK government introduced E10 Fuel as the standard fuel available at petrol pumps. There is little to worry about as most garden machinery will be unaffected and will still be compatible to run on the new fuel.

HOWEVER, the major difference between, the previously used, E5 and E10 fuel is the increase of bioethanol used inside the fuel from 5% to 10%, which makes it more environmentally friendly. This increase in bio-ethanol makes fuel more susceptible to 'go off' or stale quicker, as it absorbs moisture from the atmosphere which can cause issues, like corrosion, mainly seen with engines fitted with a carburettor.

This is a more prominent issue with garden machinery as users are less likely to be constantly using fresh fuel each time they use their machinery, due to the little volume needed to operate their machine; it's also more practical to bulk buy fuel and keep it stored. Storing fuel for long periods unfortunately allows the fuel to breath and absorb more moisture from the air. It is recommended that any fuel purchased from the pumps is used within 2-3 weeks. After this it should be disposed of safely.

In light of this, WGM recommend using Aspen, Stihl MotoMix or Husqvarna Power fuel iun your machinery, which all come in 2-stroke and 4-stroke versions. This is beneficial for 3 reasons:

  • It is premixed so you do not have to worry about buying your own fuel & mixing if using 2-stroke tools.
  • It has a far greater shelf life so you should not suffer running problems.
  • It runs much cleaner through your machine, potentailly reducing engine problems and servicing costs.
