British Lawn Perfection: Hayter Lawn Mowers

In 1946, as Britain was slowly rebuilding after the Second World War, engineer Douglas Hayter saw a significant need. The available lawnmowers were often cumbersome and inefficient, especially for the overgrown gardens that had been neglected during the war years. Inspired by a horse-drawn rotary mower at the London Science Museum, Douglas had a brilliant idea: to create a modern, engine-powered rotary mower capable of tackling rough terrain with ease.

Working from his workshop in Spellbrook, Hertfordshire, Douglas crafted his first prototype from spare parts and a second-hand, two-stroke engine. The result was the very first Hayter rotary lawn mower, a machine that was not only functional but revolutionary. He named it the Hayter Motor Scythe, and it was a direct competitor to the traditional cylinder mowers on the market. Demand for his mowers grew rapidly, and in 1946, Hayter became a limited company. The following year, the Hayter Motor Scythe went into full production, with an impressive 24-inch cut width.

The Power Behind the Stripes: Hayter Petrol Mowers

From its inception, the petrol engine has been at the very heart of the Hayter lawn mower legacy. Early models, including the original "Motor Scythe," were powered by robust two-stroke engines, providing the raw cutting power needed for challenging lawns. As the company evolved, its petrol-powered range expanded. The introduction of the Harrier series became a landmark moment, defining the brand for generations of gardeners.

These Hayter petrol mowers are known for their strength, durability, and the signature striped finish they create. This combination allows for a clean, precise cut and the creation of those much-coveted stripes. The ability to handle large lawns and tough conditions without being tethered by a cord has made Hayter's petrol mowers the top choice for both professional landscapers and homeowners who demand uncompromising performance.
